Laugh Riot Grrrl is a division of Tao Comedy Studio, which is owned and operated by 30-year veteran comedian/ comedy coach Bobbie Oliver, Author of The Tao of Comedy: Embrace The Pause, and comedian/writer Chris Oliver.
Based out of our groovy location in Koreatown in Los Angeles, Tao Comedy Studio is an intersectional feminist comedy space, which won LA Weekly’s Best of LA and Open Mic Reviews' Best Safe Space Mic and Best Place To Do Your First Set. Inspired by the Riot Grrrl punk rock feminist movement, Laugh Riot Grrrl seeks to encourage feminist voices in comedy through booked shows, open mics, women in comedy roundtables, workshops, comedy festivals and more. We produce live comedy shows called You Had To Be There, Pussy Riot Comedy (benefits the Downtown Women’s Center) and a monthly LGBT+ Showcase (benefits the LA LGBT Center), featuring LA's hottest-up-and-coming stand-up comics and improv/sketch groups.
Tao Comedy Studio has four open mics each week, including Laugh Riot Grrrl’s Women Only Open Mic on Mondays and Tuesdays’ LGBT on the M.I.C., giving marginalized voices a safe space to create new material with the support of their peers. Our Friday and Sunday mics are open to everyone. Our policy is no (pro) victim-blaming rape jokes or (pro) violence against women material. Tao also offers a Comedians Depression/ Mental Health Support Group monthly. Please come if you are a comic who needs support.
Our Laugh Riot Grrrl Comedy Festival, every June, features over 100 women standup comedians, sketch groups, improvisers, musical comedians and storytellers! We also feature the hilarious male comics who support our cause. We love our comedy brothers! Trans and non-binary comics are definitely welcome!!
Tao Comedy Studio has the best comedy workshops in Los Angeles and private one-on-one sessions, taught by Bobbie Oliver. We also rent out our lovely space for shows, screenings, rehearsals, table readings, workshops, filming, meetings, and more. Email us for more info.
